Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Rahim Othman, also known as Dr. ARO, received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Universiti Sains Malaysia, a master's degree in automotive engineering from the University of Leeds, UK, and his PhD degree in 2007 from the School of Mechanical Engineering at University of Leeds, UK.
He currently works at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was a Director of the Research Management Center of UTP from 2018 to 2021. He was selected as the National Youth Scientist from the Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM) in 2016-2017.
His current research interests include mechanics of materials, finite element analysis, risk-based inspection of mechanical damages, and statistical & probability analysis. He is also an inventor/co-inventor under PETRONAS/UTP IP:ADaPT (Advance Diagnostic and Prognostic Technology for Mechanical Damages), STELLAR (Statistical Tube Exchanger Analytics and Reliability), SCTi (Smart Crack Technology Instrument), INSPIRE (Insulated Piping Reliability Engineering Analysis) and CORIMS-STS (Composite Repair Integrated Management System-Smart Tagging System).
All these technologies have been successfully deployed to PETRONAS and other oil and gas industries, saving more than RM 1.5 billion last year alone. He has also contributed directly and worked together with Becht. He has received several focused recognitions from PETRONAS OPUs (PCML, PCMTBE, PCFK, etc), the latest one was awarded in August 2023 by the GTS Leadership Team.
He has also been appointed as one of the technical advisors for PETRONAS SKG12.2 Static Equipment for talent reshaping and management. He is also actively involved with the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) as a subject matter expert (SME) a national reviewer of research projects, and an auditor of national Hi-CoE. He has received research grant funding and consultancy projects from the Government and industries amounting to more than RM 70M.
